Wanted: Your experiences as a customer service professional

As a customer service professional, I am tired of hearing about how bad customer service has become. Yes, I know that there are bad apples in every bunch, but the majority of people I have worked with in a public-serving capacity have all been very dedicated to ensuring that the customer has a good experience.

Consequently, I have a hard time believing that the fault in some of these purportedly bad customer service experiences are completely the fault of the customer service industry's bad apple employees. I'd be willing to go so far as to say that some of those bad experiences may be the direct result of the offended customer's behavior.

The customer is not always right. In fact, sometimes – just sometimes – the customer is a self-righteous jerk who treats each and every customer service representative as though they're at his beckoned call, on her personal payroll. I'm tired of it, which is the inspiration for this project. It's time for the tired, weary, overworked, severely underpaid, huddled masses of people who have been treated like the feces on the bottom of a new pair of Ferragamos (or Keds, as this phenomenon is not exclusive to wealth) to stand up and be heard.

That said, I am working on a project and would greatly appreciate it if you would send me one – or more! - of your worst customer experiences. All submissions become my property and are reproducible in any format. If you do happen to include things such as your real name or your place of business, please be sure to indicate whether you'd like to remain anonymous.

Send your stories to rudecustomers AT gmail DOT com – and thank you for your efforts, they are not unappreciated – by me, or by most of the people you help on a daily basis.

So....are you going to be adding to this blog?
What's your plan for this space?

I will be adding as the situation warrants. Updates and such, possibly some of my own experiences I might be working into the book. I have a personal blog, and have really held back from venting about work there, because I do enjoy my job and would hate to lose it through the magic of Doocing.

Just a bit on the Dooce thing--she deserved it. She blatantly talked shit about her coworkers and bosses in a manner that could not be mistaken for anybody else.
However, since that time, people have gotten canned for having blogs and haven't said one word about work. The muckety-mucks didn't like the content and it wasn't porn either.
The fascism repulses the outer Democrat in me.
